Bremen: Pioneer of the Urban Digital Twin
Bremen is among the pioneers of digital urban planning in Germany. Building on the VC Suite, the interdisciplinary project team from land surveying, urban development, and IT has created an in-house 3D infrastructure – modular, secure, and exemplary for other municipalities.
The central tool of digital transformation is the VC Planner: an intuitive web application that brings together urban planning, heritage conservation, and public participation in a shared 3D environment. Whether in design competitions, sightline analyses, or building applications under §34 of the German Building Code (BauGB), the Planner supports well-founded decisions on a clear visual basis.
The system is complemented by VC Map, Building Reconstruction (BRec), and the new VC Story (here illustrated by our anniversary VC Story in German marking the 20th anniversary of VCS), which communicates complex projects such as city center development or flood protection in a way tailored to different target groups.
Bremen demonstrates how a Digital Twin can evolve into an integrated planning strategy – open, practical, and delivering tangible benefits for administration, policymakers, and the public alike.
