Digital TwinUrban Simulation
EU-funded project DUET successfully completed
The DUET (Digital Urban European Twins) project, funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, sees itself as a European innovation initiative in the field of digital twins and has received much national and international attention over the course of its three-year project period.
DUET was awarded the World Smart City Award 2021 in the category “Enabling Technologies” and was a finalist in the “Tech for Government” competition.
In November 2022, the project has now been completed, after three years of intensive and successful collaboration between all project partners. VCS is one of seventeen partners who have jointly created virtual replicas of the cities of Athens, Pilsen and the Flanders region. As a specialist in the technical implementation of Digital Twins, VCS contributed its powerful visualization and planning technology, which – in combination with components developed in DUET – simulates and visualizes future conditions of the model regions.
A very good overview of the achieved project goal – to support better operational and long-term policy decisions through valid data-based information – is given in the final dossier published these days.

For even more concrete insights into the real life case studies that DUET enables, watch the video “Flanders digital twin supports evidence-based policy making” using the example of the Flanders region.
Jan Jambon, Prime Minister of Flanders, as well as Lieven Raes and Raf Buyle from Digital Flanders explain vividly how much the project results achieved in DUET help to visualize policy planning in order to make better policy decisions.

VCS webinar and presentation
In June 2022, VCS hosted a webinar together with Gert Vervaet from Digital Flanders, presenting the project in detail. Gert Vervaet as Co-Coordinator for DUET shows the valuable project results with concrete examples for all three project regions, but especially for Flanders. Thomas Adolphi from VCS explains the technical requirements and developments that were necessary for DUET.
The webinar “DUET – Connecting Europe through digital innovation” can be viewed on the GoTo Stage channel of Virtual City Systems.
Thomas Adolphi’s presentation at the VCS user conference UC 2022 serves as a supplement.
